Club Expectations – Liverpool fan’s can look forward to exciting, attacking football.
Liverpool’s accomplishments last campaign have somewhat forced expectations to rise this time around. In Brendan Rodgers word’s they have made teams in England and Europe, “sit up and take notice.”
Liverpool have completely restored their pride turning around an average seventh place finish in Rodgers first season in charge, to nearly claiming the Premier League title. What was more impressive was the manner in which they did it, playing some quite extraordinary football, simply blowing opposition teams away.
One thing that was undoubtedly on Rodgers side last time around was the lack of expectation for a credible title challenge, a top four finish and a return to champions league football.
When the new season kicks off, Liverpool themselves will expect a lot more. Rodgers has so far spent well on bringing in new players. With the likes of Lallana and Lambert he has players with Premier League experience, who will fit well into Liverpool’s style of play. With Can and Marković joining the ranks as well he has two talented youngsters whose game will only improve. With a host of names being linked to Anfield, Liverpool will have the depth they never had last year. Although 31 goal Luis Suarez has left albeit in a good bit of business, the least that Liverpool fans can expect is a credible champions league campaign. But most importantly a serious mount for the title.
One thing Brendan Rodgers has done is continually improve players at Liverpool. He has maxed out their potential and put players in positions they can excel in. Who would have seen Raheem Sterling’s rise to providence or the improvement in Jordan Henderson’s game. Few would have predicted Jon Flanagan could have had the sort of impact he did, towards the end of the season. With this sort of thinking Liverpool fans might expect to see a few youngster’s come through the ranks, Jordan Ibe has been an exciting prospect in pre-season and this could be a make or break season for academy graduate Martin Kelly.
The most exciting thing for Liverpool fans to look forward to, is simply the football. Liverpool played some outstanding high-pressure, attacking football and notably gave out some beatings to big opposition. Who could forget the first 20 minutes against Arsenal.
Any Liverpool fan must know that they ultimately lost out to Manchester City due to a weakness in their defence. With this in mind Rodgers has been looking to bolster his defence and has snapped up Dejan Lovren with Alberto Moreno looking to be on his way. Although they must tighten up at the back, I would not expect them to change their philosophy in any way, attacking football has always been at the heart of the club.
With Brendan Rodgers at the helm, Liverpool have a young tactically astute manager and he said himself is working on a project. With this in mind the club has a bright future and the fans only have good things to look forward to.
