‘CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE’ at the Etihad
Manuel Pellegrini expressed that his side were suffering from a ‘crisis of confidence’ after their 2-1 home defeat in the Champions League to CSKA Moscow. City continued their poor run of form with a surprise defeat at the Etihad Stadium which now leaves them with one win in five games. Yaya Toure and Ferdandinho were both dismissed in the second-half which represented a bleak night at the Etihad Stadium. Seydou Doumbia’s early first-half brace left the Premier League Champions drop to the root of Group E with two points after four games.
City’s chances of qualifying out of the group seem somewhat of a ‘mountain to climb’. They’re no longer in control of their destiny. Victory in their final two games against Bayern Munich and Roma could still see the Premier League Champions eliminated at the group stage.
Manuel Pellegrini believes there are no excuses for their miserable form in Europe. “It’s difficult to understand why we’re playing with such low performance” stated the Chilean.
“We must try to find out what happened with the team in the Champions League. I think that the mentality of the players; all of them are important players”.
“We must try to understand why we have such low performances”.
Yaya Toure managed to pull one back for City on either side of Doumbia’s brace with a magnificent free-kick firing into the top corner. On the 70th minute substitute Fernandinho was sent off for a second bookable offence. City were left with 10 men and 20 minutes remaining to change the scoreline.
But goalscorer Toure had other endeavours as he showed a moment of weakness when he lashed out at Roman Eremenko and was dismissed on the 81st minute for his actions. City’s lacklustre performance continued in Europe as they were left with only nine men on the field and leaves Pellegrini with more than just a crisis.
