Everton Ladies relegated
Everton have been relegated following their 2-0 Super League defeat at Notts County.
The relegation ends a 21-year stay in the top tier, a feat that could have only been rivalled by the famous and highly successful Arsenal Ladies side.
Tears dripped down from the eyes of the Everton players at the final whistle as County kept themselves up in the process and jumped ahead of Everton in the league, leaving Everton helpless in their fight for survival with just two games remaining.
It was a sad end for a club who can no longer boast a top-flight history stretching back into the last century, though, the Toffees haven’t won a game this season, the big club will be missed as they will now have to look ahead to football in the second tier of the Women’s Super League.
Everton were crowned champions of the league in 1998, a triumph considered a sublime achievement as they beat the almost unstoppable Arsenal side at the time. The club have also won both the FA Cup and the League Cup in the last six year.
Following the result, the club’s manager Andy Spence told BBC Sport: “We’re a club with a proud history and we’re devastated.”
County manager Rick Passmoor was also a little deflated at the final whistle: “The most important thing was our survival, but it’s awful to have sent Everton down.” He told BBC Sport.
Spence said that he was the man responsible for his team’s relegation, raising doubt on whether or not he will be managing the faltering club next season.
Everton are bottom of the league with four points and County are above on 12. Meanwhile, Man City are now level with Bristol Academy on sixteen points after they beat Bristol at the weekend as the relegation battle heats up heading into the penultimate games.
