Midweek football league review.

The MK Dons took full advantage of their game in hand over leaders Bristol City, as Dele Alli’s late strike secured victory over promotion rivals Sheffield United.

The Dons arrived at Bramall Lane in fourth, just one place above their opponents and with both sides hoping to put pressure on the those above them. The Blades played their part in a hard fought match, but in the end Alli’s 87th minute effort after Mark Howard failed to hold on to Danny Green’s shot was the difference. Green’s late red card was the only negative for Karl Robinson’s men, on a night that saw them move up to third in the table, just two points off of the summit with a game in hand.

The evenings other game was a Yorkshire derby, as Doncaster made the short trip to face neighbours Barnsley with both sides looking to move away from the relegation zone. Lewin Nyatanga’s early goal gave the home the side the lead at half time, but Theo Robinson scored early in the second period to send both sides home with a point and still at the wrong end of the table.
