David Moyes was handed his first win as Real Sociedad manager following a hat-trick from Carlos Vela.

The former Arsenal striker, though, was the main man responsible for Moyes’ first win after a superb individual performance.

The classy guile of the Mexican troubled their opponents throughout and he put the Basque side ahead with a powerful header from Carlos Martinez’ cross, following impressive trickery from Sergio Canales.

Xabi Prieto then played Vela in for Sociedad’s second, this time, Vela sprinted between Elche’s two central defenders to latch onto the pass and calmly finish past a helpless Przemysław Tyton.

His third goal was the pick of the bunch, though, he buried the ball into the far corner and through the legs of defender David Lomban.

Sociedad never looked like losing, in fact, the side impressed all round with tantalising displays from former Real Madrid man, Canales, and Moyes will also be pleased with an impressive 20 minute cameo from Ruben Pardo, the Spanish U-21 international has lots of potential, but has faltered in performances of late.

The Anoeta faithful can reminisce with confidence over the fact that they were in the Champions League for a reason last term, and if Moyes could install a new found belief in a group of players who have got quality, they could spark a remarkable turn around and firmly boost themselves into the higher echelons of the league.

The former Manchester United manager is renowned for a defensive and strict approach, and the Scotsman would have been delighted by the fact it is the club’s second clean sheet in a row following their 0-0 draw against Deportivo La Coruna last time out.

Sociedad are now 12th in the league and travel to Villarreal next week.
