Shaw expected to start

Luke Shaw is finally expected to make his debut for Man United today as they host West Ham.

The 19-year-old England international has missed the start of the season due to a hamstring injury, but manager Louis Van Gaal also criticised his fitness in the build up to the season.

Shaw is understood to be delighted and relieved to return to playing after his £30million move in the summer from Southampton.

Shaw’s last competitive game was for England against Costa Rica in the World Cup, and he will enter another pressured environment as he gets ready to start for the Red Devils who have made another faltering start to their campaign.

And the circumstances are made harder for Shaw by the fact that United are currently enduring a defensive crisis with fellow new signing Marcos Rojo being the only available centre-back. Jonny Evans, Chris smalling and Phil jones are all injured, while Tyler Blackett is suspended after being sent off against Leicester last week.

Youngster Tom Thorpe is expected to start alongside Rojo with Rafael at right-back, although midfielder Daley Blind could drop into the centre-half position with other youngster Ryan McNair ready to make his debut in defence from the bench.

In-form West Ham will certainly not sit back at Old Trafford meaning it could be a tough debut for Shaw as Man United are not quite as favorited as they would usually be.
