Two Cup Finals: But Who Should Liverpool Go For?
It has been a season of transition for Liverpool. Manager Brendan Rodgers was sacked in October, before German Jurgen Klopp reinvigorated the Merseyside club. The former Bundesliga manager took the Reds to two cup finals as well as guiding them to an eighth place Premier League finish.
Like with any new manager it takes a lot of time to implement a style of play. However, remarkably Klopp seems to have already imprinted his ideas onto the team. There is no doubting he has some talent in the team but this summer is essential for the club. Over the past couple of seasons Liverpool have gone for marquee signings which haven’t paid off. But judging by Klopp’s previous record he might well go for youth over a ‘name.’ So who should they sign?
Klopp surprised everyone when he handed Simon Mignolet a new five-year contract. The Belgian has had another mixed season, with several high profile mistakes coming to mind. Klopp brought back Danny Ward from Aberdeen but he has got nowhere close to the first team. German international Loris Karius recently joined the club for £4.7 million and was handed the number 1 jersey. With Adam Bogdan likely to leave, Karius could be the only goalkeeping purchase of the summer despite the links with former red Pepe Reina.
Like Rodgers, Klopp knows that he has to address the defensive fatalities in the Liverpool squad. The defence has improved since the Germans arrival, the improvements in shako and Lovren are there for all to see. Klopp has already made some improvements by bringing in Joel Matip on a free from Schalke. The big concern for Klopp is at left-back. Alberto Moreno is good going forward, but there are clear weaknesses in his defensive duties. Leicester youngster Ben Chilwell has been linked with the club, but would a teenager with such little experience be a valuable addition for the new season?
Although it looks as though the Anfield club will once more go on the policy of youth, a stellar ‘name’ always gives a club energy. Mario Gotze has been the star linked with Liverpool in recent weeks and would be the sort of ‘name’ to give the club energy and gusto. But with Phillipe Couthino, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana all in a similar mould of player, do they need him?
For every Luis Suarez there is an Andy Carroll, Christian Bentenke or Mario Balotelli. The big names don’t always work. Klopp must address the mistakes the club have made, signing the wrong kind of player for far too much money. In Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Danny Ings Liverpool have three decent strikers. But football is all about reliability. The club has been linked with Marco Reus who would be a fantastic addition to the club. He has worked with Klopp before and is the kind of all-round forward who could work well alongside Sturridge.
With so much money available to the Premier League clubs this summer will surely bring about a wealth of spending. Liverpool have a good squad that just needs tweaking, if they do the right things they will be odds on for a top four finish.
