Neil’s Tips

Southampton FC vs. QPR (27/09/2014)
Kick Off: 15:00
Competition: The Premier League
Venue: St. Mary’s Stadium

Ronald Koeman is my manager of the season thus far. What he has done is outstanding; he has galvanised the remaining players after the fire-sale of their best players over the summer, and also kept Morgan Schneiderlin away from the hands of Premier League rivals Tottenham and got him to get his head down and accept he is not going anywhere for the time being. He has also bought well, and in Graziano Pellè he seems to have found a striker who can get goals consistently, which is always good. Their opponents QPR have issues all over the field, they don’t score enough goals and not even wrapping their defenders in cling film would make them tight enough to stop shedding goals on a regular basis.

Chelsea FC vs. Aston Villa (27/09/2014)
Kick Off: 15:00
Competition: The Premier League
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will have been livid after last weeks 1-1 draw away at Premier League champions Manchester City, where after taking a 1-0 lead against 10 men they conceded in the last 10 minutes against old Chelsea favourite Frank Lampard. He will be looking to bounce back – and quick. Liverpool and Arsenal both have tough games this weekend and Manchester City face a tricky away tie, so this is an opportunity for Chelsea to gain an advantage in the league if results go their way against opponents they beat 8-0 at the Bridge 2 seasons ago. Speaking of their opponents Aston Villa, who have had a good start to the season with the high point coming with victory at Anfield, were well beaten at home to Arsenal last weekend. This game should bring Aston Villa back down to Earth, as Mourinho teams rarely fail to win at home.

Barcelona vs. Granada (27/09/2014)
Kick Off: 17:00
Competition: La Liga
Venue: Camp Nou

Barcelona dropped their first La Liga points of the season midweek away at Malaga, and it was deserved as they struggled to play their usual passing game and looked lethargic in their movement, with Lionel Messi struggling in particular. The game ended 0-0, which means Barcelona are still yet to concede a goal this season, which means manager Luis Enrique has finally solved that susceptibility to leak goals unnecessarily – for the time being. This trend will likely continue this weekend, as the Catalans will go up against Granada, who despite beating Barcelona 1-0 at their own place last season have a pretty dismal record against them. Granada have had a good start to the season, but you feel this will be a bridge to far for them.

AS Roma vs. Verona (27/09/2014)
Kick Off: 17:00
Competition: Serie A
Venue: Stadio Olimpico

Roma are a fantastic and underrated side. They have one of the best defences in the continent and attacking talent galore, a perfect combination for a successful football team. The loss of Mehdi Benatia to Bayern Munich was seen as an occurrence that would make Roma less solid at the back, it has actually been quite the contrary and they have only conceded 1 goal so far this season domestically, and in Gervinho they have a player that whenever he seems to play under his current coach Rudi Garcia, becomes a world beater (He also played under Garcia at Lille). All of this spells out a tough day at the office for opponents Hellas Verona, who on the 4 occasions they have gone to the Stadio Olimpico in recent time, they have succumbed to defeat, and I don’t see that changing this weekend.

Zwolle vs. Heracles (27/09/2014)
Kick Off: 18:45
Competition: Eredivise
Venue: IJsseldelta Stadion

This result seems the most likely of all the weekend games. Zwolle have kicked off from where they left off last season, where they won the first silverware in their history. They currently sit third 3 points behind leader PSV and have won all their domestic home matches so far this season. They host Heracles who have had an absolutely awful start to the season, they are already 5 points adrift at the bottom of the division and are yet to claim a single point after 6 games. Routine home win.

Atalanta vs. Juventus (27/09/2014)
Kick Off: 19:45
Competition: Serie A
Venue: Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia

Juventus are showing no signs of waining after what has been a very successful period domestically, and look favourites to claim what would be a fourth Serie A title on the bounce. After the coach who was responsible for those titles left in the form of Antonio Conte, it was left to new arrival Massamiliano Allegri to pick up the mantle and he has done just that. Sticking with the 3 at the back system that serves Juventus so well they have yet to concede this season and sit on top of Serie A by virtue of goal difference after a perfect tart to the campaign. They travel to Atalanta who they simply love to play against – especially in Atalanta where they have won on each of the last 5 occasions they have played them on their patch.

Inter Milan vs. Cagliari (28/09/2014)
Kick Off: 14:00
Competition: Serie A
Venue: San Siro

After last seasons third placed finishers Napoli started the current season poorly, it seems as if Inter are now favourites to claim it and move back to the promise land of the Champions League, a competition they won just 4 years ago in 2010. This is not without good reason, they have started the season brilliantly and are top scorers in Serie A after 10 goals in 4 games and have a striker in Mauro Icardi who looks well suited to Inter’s style of play. The two clubs recent form also point to an Inter win, Inter have won their last 5 home games with an aggregate score of 18-0, and away from home Cagliari so far this season have an aggregate score against them of 9-1. Inter victory.
